Hi-tech security provides Defence protection

Imagine installing high-tech security equipment while surrounded, not by a standard nondescript office environment, but racks of rifles or boxes of bullets. Perhaps you hear a fighter jet roaring nearby as it takes off. This is not a typical job and not a typical working environment! Operating within DIO, the Security Services Group (SSG) provides a security service to areas of the public sector requiring the highest level of security protection.

I undertake a lot of different tasks as part of my role, but my main daily duties include installation and maintenance of security systems across many government locations. SSG engineers install classified intruder alarm panels across the majority of MOD sites, mainly in armouries and ammunition bunkers. The alarm devices that we use have to be suitable to the buildings we are working in, so that they provide protection without causing any risk of hazards, such as explosions! We also provide CCTV coverage at sites with 24-hour surveillance protection on internal and external buildings. As well as this, we also provide access-control systems – for example card swipe systems - across a lot of MOD and government buildings.

SSG interested me initially because I am an alarm engineer and electrician by trade and the Civil Service package was very appealing. The fact that SSG is part of the Civil Service, and also the MOD, gives me a great sense of pride when carrying out my role. As a technician, I can see first-hand that we provide a valuable service to our Armed Forces and the country as a whole.

The best characteristics of an engineer are integrity, reliability, experience, honesty, and having the drive to give a good service to our clients at all times. In this job, every situation can bring about a challenge. When going on a callout or working on an installation it can bring a different challenge each time because it's imperative that we get everything right and don't leave anything to chance.

Personally, I think that my career highlights are ongoing. Working for and providing security for our clients, and particularly for our Armed Forces gives me a great deal of satisfaction on a daily basis. The job is very rewarding.
