I started my career as a chartered surveyor at a corporate firm in Bristol where I worked for three years. However, in 2017 we found out that we would be moving 200 miles north to Catterick Garrison, with my husband’s job.
By complete coincidence, the same day that I found out we were moving, I received an email advertising a job as an estate surveyor in Catterick Garrison. I had not considered working for DIO before but having read the advert I was very keen to find out more. I applied online and, following an interview with Colin and Ian, who are now my line managers, my career with DIO began.
The role of an estate surveyor at DIO
The variety of work I am involved in is extensive and I enjoy working alongside the military. As an estate surveyor, I look after a wide variety of property types, including offices and commercial premises, and some of my more unusual sites include nurseries, schools, airfields, and hangars. As well as working with a range of property types, I also cover a wide geographical area; the majority of my sites are located in Yorkshire, but I have sites as far west as Anglesey and east to Lincolnshire. I enjoy getting out and about and seeing the MOD’s estate which is so vast and diverse.
As an estate surveyor I undertake lease renewals, rent reviews, new lettings, dilapidations and general property management. I also get involved with strategic disposals of land and buildings.
I am also an Army Reservist and serve with 71 Engineer Regiment, part of the Royal Engineers. DIO has an excellent reservist policy, which allows me to take additional leave in order to undertake my reservist commitments. It is wonderful working for an organisation which encourages and supports my reservist role.
We are currently recruiting for Estate Surveyors across the UK, so if all this sounds appealing to you Check Civil Service Jobs for our vacancies.
